Creativity For Netting The Internet
Dr. N. N. Panicker
creativity-network

What Is Internet?

a. A global pool of information and services, accessible by means of locally executed interface software through computer and telephone

b. Technically: world-wide network of computer networks connected through a set of standards, protocols and mechanisms allowing interaction, and sharing of software & data

c.A society functioning without the requirement of a central governing body

Cyberspace

It is the domain of computer communications; a world in which physical and national boundaries become irrelevant; a place in which the laws and regulations of centuries become difficult, impossible or irrelevant to apply; a place which might evolve its own nationhood:
Cybernation

Cyberpolitics

Access and rights of cyber space and the Internet are inherently anti-hierarchical, allow people to experiment with their identify and provide access to a wide range of information. The key issue is who has access? - a small privileged sector of developed societies.

"Even a year ago, demonstrators were burning computers on the streets of Okinawa saying that poor people need water and you can't drink a computer. In fact...there isn't a trade-off between information technologies and other development needs. '' -Vernon Ellis, Digital Opportunity Task Force of G8

The Digital Divide

G8 (U.S., Japan, Canada, Germany, France, Britain, Italy and Russia) on 2001.07.21 endorsed an action plan to bridge the "digital divide'' with the poorest countries.

Gain better access

Promote the use in reducing poverty

$1.5 billion from World Bank annual investment in digital technology

U.S. government pledge of $100 million to help implement the report

Language:
  • Development of new universal language
  • Simultaneous, real time translation

  • Freedom to redistribute copies
  • Freedom to improve and release modified versions of software to the public

Development direction to avoid infrastructure limitations

Air-conditioning: No more needed; sturdier structure

Power supply: Battery backup, solar, clockwork

Telephone: Wireless, satellite

Cost: Cheap computer, modem and telephone

Charges: Free services, shared contributions

Proliferation: Time sharing, cyber café, schools, libraries

Memory and Speed: Pooling and Sharing, use of not-in-use time

Human Development

Profit motive: Selfless new attitude

Information flood: Devices to fine tune, search, options

Misinformation & mistakes: Devices to warn eg. grammar/spell check

Mischief: Devices to warn and guard

Corruption of minds: Tools to keep out options

Health hazards: Self monitoring, warning, stimulation for break,

New technology to reduce harm, Screen savers to cool it off, Exercise and meditation promotion

Two initiatives proposed:

1. Equal Internet Opportunity Movement

Plan and Policy for Development & Implementation OSM and FSF Approach vs. WB Aid

Patent, Copyright, Monopoly Microsoft monopoly is natural; even without foul play Russian programmer arrested

Accessibility vs. Infrastructure Cyber cafes- bringing internet to India and India to internet

Connectivity vs. Content Connectivity solutions: Electronic Data Interface, etc.

Communication vs. Commerce People's Participation for Swaraj

2. Internet Creativity Initiative. (ICI)

Software and Hardware Development

Real-time brainstorming facility

P2P Network Connectivity Breakthrough

Universal Access Tools

Information Content Compiler eg. MIT puts all courses on line
